A customer says the coolant reservoir needs topping off about every week, but no puddles or wet spots are ever found under the vehicle. With the engine cold, the technician removes the cap, installs a cooling system pressure tester on the filler neck, and pumps the system up to the cap's rated pressure. The gauge holds steady for 15 minutes with no visible leaks anywhere.

Technician A says this proves there is no internal leak, so the technician should simply top off the coolant and tell the customer to monitor the level.

Technician B says a steady reading on a cold, static pressure test does not rule out an internal leak (such as a head gasket) that only shows up when the engine is hot and under load, and recommends further tests such as a combustion leak (block) test or cylinder leakage test before releasing the vehicle.

ASE A8 study guide — FAQ

What does the ASE A8 study guide cover?
Every area of the A8 Task List — what each area tests, how many scored questions it's worth, and the specific tasks under it — so you study exactly what the exam blueprints, in the right proportions.
Is this the ASE study guide?
No. ASE publishes its own free study guides at ase.com; this is an independent guide that follows the same public Task List. Our questions are original and validated.
How should I study for ASE A8?
Work area by area in the proportions the test uses (the percentages below), drill each area until you're consistently above 80%, then take full timed simulators. Space your review so it sticks.
