Dismounting and Mounting a Tire on a Wheel
The short version — Deflate completely by pulling the valve core first, break both beads before you try to pull the tire, work the tire changer head progressively around the rim (never all at once), lubricate every step, inspect everything before remounting, and seat/inflate to the placard number — not the sidewall max.
Before Anything Touches the Tire: Deflate and Inspect
The very first move is pulling the valve core to fully deflate the tire before any bead-breaking or demounting starts. This isn't just procedure — it's the safety gate. You confirm zero air pressure by removing the valve core before you ever put a bead breaker or lever tool on the tire. Skipping this step is how techs get hurt or trash a bead, because a bead breaker or pry bar working against residual air pressure can slip or launch the tire.
Once the tire is off (or before you commit to reusing it), the technician checks the bead area, rim flange, and inside of the tire for damage, cracks, or debris. This inspection happens during the demounting stage, before the tire goes back on — you're looking for anything that would keep the bead from sealing airtight on remount, or anything that tells you this tire shouldn't go back into service.
Why this order matters: everything downstream — bead breaking, demounting, remounting — depends on the tire being fully depressurized and the wheel/tire surfaces being clean and undamaged. Rushing past either step is where failures start.
Breaking the Bead and Working the Tire Off
The bead breaker mechanism pushes the tire bead down and away from the bead seat area on both sides of the wheel before the tire can be pried off the rim. Both sides — not just one. The bead has to be fully unseated all the way around before the mount/demount head can get a bite on it.
On the tire changer, the mount/demount head (duckhead) works in one direction around the rim flange, and the tire comes off (or goes on) progressively around the circumference rather than all at once. This is a testable distinction — you're not yanking the whole tire off in one motion. The tool walks around the wheel, working the bead over the flange bit by bit.
Through all of this — bead breaking, demounting, and mounting — bead lubricant (never oil-based) goes on the bead and rim flange to cut friction and keep the bead from tearing or gouging. Skipping lube, or using the wrong kind, is a direct path to bead damage.
Putting It Back Together: Mount, Seat, and Set Pressure
Once the tire is reinstalled (same tire or new), the bead has to be seated using a controlled inflation method, and you confirm the bead seating line is even all the way around both sidewalls. An uneven seating line means the bead didn't pull up evenly — that's your sign something's wrong before the tire ever leaves the bay.
Final step: set tire pressure to the vehicle's tire placard spec — not the number molded into the sidewall — and do it with a calibrated tire gauge. The placard is the vehicle manufacturer's spec for that tire/vehicle combination; the sidewall number is just the tire's maximum rating. Mixing these up is a classic wrong-answer trap.
The whole point of this process: service or replace the tire while protecting the wheel and any wheel-mounted sensors, and end up with an airtight bead seal. Every step above exists to serve that purpose.
Where Things Go Wrong
Knowing the failure modes helps you both avoid them and recognize them on a comeback vehicle:
- Bead damage or a cut bead from improper tool use — shows up later as an air leak.
- TPMS sensor breakage from the mount/demount head or tool not clearing the sensor properly inside the wheel.
- Rim flange scratching or gouging from demounting without lubricant, or forcing the tire instead of working it progressively.
- Improper bead seating — causes vibration or ongoing air loss even though the tire looks mounted fine.
Every one of these traces back to skipping a step above: no lube, wrong tool clearance, forcing instead of working around the circumference, or not checking the seating line.
Easy to mix up
- Sidewall max pressure vs. placard pressure — always set final pressure to the placard, never the sidewall number. The sidewall is a ceiling rating, not a target.
- Bead breaking vs. demounting — bead breaking happens first and separately; it frees the bead from the seat, but the tire still has to be worked off the rim afterward with the mount/demount head.
- Valve core removal purpose — it's not just "letting air out," it's the way you confirm zero pressure before using any bead tool. Treat it as a safety check, not a convenience step.
