Checking and Adjusting Tire Air Pressure Using the Placard

The short version — Always set pressure to the number on the vehicle's tire placard, never the number molded on the tire sidewall, and always check cold, with a real gauge on the valve stem, not by eyeballing the tire.

Placard vs. Sidewall — Know Which Number Rules

The tire placard is the authoritative source for inflation pressure on that vehicle. You'll find it on the door jamb, in the glovebox, or on the fuel door. It gives the vehicle manufacturer's recommended cold tire inflation pressure, broken out by tire size and position.

The number stamped into the tire sidewall is a completely different spec — it's the tire manufacturer's maximum safe inflation pressure rating, not what you should actually run in that car. Mixing these two up is one of the most common mistakes on the job and on the test. If a customer or a fellow tech says "just fill it to what's on the tire," that's the wrong reference.

Some vehicles complicate this further: the placard may list different pressures for front vs. rear, and/or separate specs for loaded vs. normal driving conditions, and/or a spec for a full-size spare. Read the placard position by position — don't assume all four corners (or the spare) take the same number.

Measuring and Adjusting Correctly

Use a tire pressure gauge — stick-type, dial, or digital, doesn't matter which style — and press it squarely onto the valve stem core. A crooked or partial seal lets air hiss out while you're trying to read it, giving you a false low reading.

To adjust:

  • Add air through the valve stem to bring pressure up to spec.
  • Depress the valve core to bleed air off if you're over spec.
  • Re-measure after every adjustment — don't guess and walk away. Keep cycling add/bleed/measure until the gauge matches the placard value for that position.

Once you're at the correct number, reinstall the valve stem cap. It's not just cosmetic — it keeps dirt and moisture out of the valve and acts as a secondary seal if the valve core itself develops a slow leak.

Why the Right Pressure Matters

Correct pressure isn't arbitrary — it's what makes the tread contact patch the right shape. Get it right and you get good ride quality, handling, even tire wear, full load-carrying capacity, and expected fuel economy. Move off spec in either direction and multiple systems suffer at once, not just one thing.

  • Underinflation: the tire flexes too much at the sidewall, which builds heat, causes faster wear at the tread edges/shoulders, and gives you mushy, delayed handling response. Run it too low long enough and you're looking at a real risk of tire failure or blowout. This is the direction that causes the scarier failures.
  • Overinflation: the tire rides on a smaller contact patch, concentrated in the center of the tread, so that's where you'll see the wear. Customers will also complain the ride feels harsh, and you actually lose traction because less rubber is touching the road.

Both directions cost the customer something — wear, comfort, economy, or safety — just in different ways. That's why "close enough" isn't good enough; adjust to the exact placard number, not a ballpark.

Don't Trust Your Eyes

A tire that looks fine can still be significantly underinflated — this is especially true of radial tires, which are built to hold their shape and don't bulge or sag the way older bias-ply tires would when low. Visual inspection alone is not a reliable way to check pressure. If a pressure check is called for, get the gauge on the valve stem. There's no shortcut here that holds up.

Easy to mix up

  • Placard pressure vs. sidewall pressure — placard = what to run; sidewall = maximum rating, not a target.
  • Underinflation wear pattern vs. overinflation wear pattern — underinflation wears the shoulders/edges; overinflation wears the center. If you see wear at the edges, suspect low pressure; wear concentrated in the middle, suspect too much air.
  • Cold pressure vs. whatever it reads after driving — the placard spec is a cold pressure reference; don't confuse a hot post-drive reading with the spec value.

Check yourself

Question: A customer wants their tires filled to the number printed on the tire sidewall because "that's what the tire is rated for." What should you tell them, and why?

Explain that the sidewall number is the tire manufacturer's maximum safe inflation pressure, not the recommended operating pressure for their vehicle. The correct number to use is on the vehicle's tire placard (door jamb, glovebox, or fuel door), which gives the pressure the vehicle manufacturer actually wants for that tire size and position.

Question: Technician A says all four tires on a vehicle always take the same pressure. Technician B says the placard may list different pressures for front and rear, or for loaded versus normal conditions. Who is right?

Technician B. Some vehicles specify different front and rear pressures, and/or different pressures for loaded vs. normal driving conditions, and possibly a separate spec for a full-size spare. You have to check the placard position by position.

Question: Why can't you just glance at a tire to tell if it needs air, and what's the risk of running a tire low anyway?

A visual check isn't reliable because radial tires can look properly inflated even when they're significantly underinflated — they don't sag or bulge the way older tires would. Running low causes heat buildup and excess sidewall flex, which leads to faster wear at the tread shoulders, worse handling response, and ultimately raises the risk of tire failure or blowout.
