Wheel Bearing Service: Repack, Replace, and Adjust

The short version — Know the teardown/reassembly sequence for serviceable tapered roller bearings, how to judge a bearing/race as reusable vs. junk, and the noise/looseness/ABS symptoms that point to bad bearings — sealed hub units get replaced whole, serviceable ones get cleaned, packed, and adjusted.

Two Bearing Designs, Two Repair Paths

Every wheel bearing does the same job: it supports vehicle weight and lets the wheel/hub spin freely with almost no friction, while holding the hub in precise alignment with the spindle so the brakes and wheel track true. How you service that bearing depends on which of two designs you're looking at.

  • Serviceable tapered roller bearings — these come apart. You can remove them, clean them, repack them with grease, and adjust the preload.
  • Sealed/non-serviceable hub bearing assemblies — these are a sealed cartridge. When they wear out, you replace the whole unit; there's no cleaning or repacking option.

Knowing which type you're working on tells you whether you're headed for a repack job or a straight parts swap.

Teardown and Reassembly Sequence (Serviceable Bearings)

The order matters — skipping steps or doing them out of sequence is how parts get damaged or lost. The sequence is:

  1. Remove the wheel and drum.
  2. Remove the dust cap.
  3. Remove the cotter pin (or nut lock), then the adjusting nut and washer.
  4. Slide off the outer bearing along with the hub assembly.
  5. The inner bearing and seal come out from the back of the hub — the seal faces inward, toward the axle housing.

That last point is a common trip-up: the inner seal's orientation isn't arbitrary. It faces the axle housing side because its job is sealing against that inner environment, not the outer dust cap side.

Cleaning, Inspection, and Reassembly

Once the bearing is out, don't just eyeball it and slap it back in.

  • Clean off all old grease with solvent first. Old grease hides pitting and debris.
  • Dry the bearing without spinning it with compressed air. A spinning bearing under air pressure can burst apart — that's a real injury hazard, not just a "best practice" line.
  • Inspect for pitting, spalling, discoloration (bluing from heat), or scoring. Any of these means the bearing is done — don't reuse it hoping it'll hold.
  • Races and cones are matched sets. A race must never be paired with a different cone than it came with. Mixing them changes the fit and load pattern even if both parts look fine individually.
  • When installing a new race, press or drive it in fully seated with a proper driver — never use the old bearing itself as an improvised punch. That damages the new race's fit surface before it's even in service.
  • Repacking means forcing grease through the roller cage — by hand or with a bearing packer — until grease fills every cavity between the rollers and the cage, not just a smear on the outside. Then apply a thin coat of grease to the races before you drop the hub back on.

The logic behind all of this: a bearing runs on a microscopically thin film of grease between hardened surfaces. Any contamination, mismatch, or air pocket in that film shows up later as heat, wear, and noise.

Failure Symptoms You'll Be Asked About

A bad wheel bearing announces itself in fairly predictable ways:

  • Growling or humming noise that changes with vehicle speed or with turning direction — bearing noise tends to load up more in a turn because turning shifts load onto one side of the bearing.
  • Wheel wobble.
  • Looseness you can feel at the tire when you grasp it at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions and rock it — this checks for vertical play in the bearing, which is what a hand-check at those clock positions is designed to find.
  • Grease leaking past the seal.
  • ABS wheel-speed sensor fault codes, on vehicles where the tone ring is built into the bearing assembly itself — a damaged or worn bearing can throw off the tone ring's signal even though the sensor itself is fine.

That last one matters diagnostically: an ABS code doesn't always mean the sensor is bad. If the tone ring lives on the bearing, a wheel bearing problem can look like a sensor problem.

Easy to Mix Up

  • 12 and 6 o'clock check vs. 3 and 9 o'clock — the fact set specifies 12 and 6 for feeling bearing looseness. Don't second-guess it toward the other pairing.
  • Race replacement tool — always a proper driver, never the old bearing used as a punch. Easy to reach for the old part as a "close enough" tool, but it's specifically called out as wrong.
  • Serviceable vs. sealed design — serviceable bearings get cleaned/packed/adjusted; sealed hub assemblies get replaced outright. Don't try to "repack" a sealed unit — it's not built to be opened.
  • Drying method — clean with solvent is fine; spinning the bearing dry with compressed air is not, because of burst risk.

On some models, the tone ring is integrated into the wheel bearing assembly. A worn or damaged bearing can disrupt the tone ring signal and trigger an ABS fault code even without a bad sensor.
