Question 1 of 3

A DOHC engine with variable valve timing has a rattling/knocking noise for about 3 seconds at cold start that disappears once idle stabilizes. The scan tool shows a stored P0011 (Camshaft Position Actuator A – Timing Over-Advanced). The oil level is correct, but the oil is dark and has not been changed in over 12,000 miles.

Technician A says the noise and code could be caused by a sludge-clogged oil control valve (OCV) screen restricting oil flow to the phaser, and recommends checking oil condition, changing the oil, and inspecting/cleaning the OCV screen before condemning the phaser.

Technician B says the noise proves the phaser itself is mechanically worn, and the phaser should be replaced immediately without checking the OCV or oil condition.

ASE A1 study guide — FAQ

What does the ASE A1 study guide cover?
Every area of the A1 Task List — what each area tests, how many scored questions it's worth, and the specific tasks under it — so you study exactly what the exam blueprints, in the right proportions.
Is this the ASE study guide?
No. ASE publishes its own free study guides at ase.com; this is an independent guide that follows the same public Task List. Our questions are original and validated.
How should I study for ASE A1?
Work area by area in the proportions the test uses (the percentages below), drill each area until you're consistently above 80%, then take full timed simulators. Space your review so it sticks.
