Determine if no-crank, crank/no-start, or hard start condition is engine mechanical problem or caused by another vehicle subsystem.

No-Crank, Crank/No-Start, and Hard-Start: Engine Fault or Something Else?
The short version — Before you touch the engine, prove whether it's actually a mechanical problem (compression, valvetrain, timing) or a fault hiding in the starting, fuel, ignition, or control system. The engine turning freely by hand, cranking at normal speed, and holding compression on all cylinders are your three big "it's probably not the engine" clues.
No-Crank: Start With the Cranking Circuit, Not the Engine
When a vehicle won't crank at all, your first move is not to assume the engine has seized. A seized engine is a rare cause of no-crank compared to electrical or starter faults, so work the cranking circuit first: battery, cables, starter relay/solenoid, starter motor, neutral safety or clutch switch, and ignition switch. Most no-crank complaints die right there.
Only after the cranking circuit checks out clean do you suspect the engine itself. The way you confirm a true mechanical no-crank is by manually rotating the crankshaft — breaker bar on the crank bolt or damper. If it won't turn, you've got a genuinely seized or hydro-locked engine. If it spins freely by hand, the no-crank is electrical, not mechanical, even though the starter isn't turning it.
This distinction matters because it tells you exactly where to spend your time. Don't pull a starter motor to bench-test it if the crank won't rotate by hand at all — and don't tear into the bottom end if the crank spins freely and the real problem is a bad neutral safety switch.
Crank/No-Start: Compression, Fuel, Spark — In That Order
Once the engine is cranking, the no-start diagnosis follows a fixed sequence: check compression first, then fuel delivery, then spark/ignition timing — because all three have to show up together and in the right timing relationship for the engine to fire. Skipping around wastes time and can send you chasing the wrong system.
Low or erratic compression on all cylinders together, combined with normal cranking speed and normal sound, points to a timing fault — jumped or broken timing chain/belt, or a sheared camshaft/crank key. This is a mechanical problem, but it's not bearings or rings — it's timing. The key diagnostic signature is that every cylinder is affected at once, not just one or two.
On the flip side, a no-start is confirmed as non-mechanical when the engine cranks at normal speed, shows adequate cranking compression on every cylinder, and turns without unusual noise. That combination tells you to stop looking at the engine and start looking at fuel delivery, ignition, or the control system (PCM, sensors, security/immobilizer).
A scan tool is a key part of this step — pull it out and check for cranking-related codes: crank/cam sensor correlation faults, immobilizer or security system faults, fuel trim codes, or misfire codes. These can produce a no-start with an engine that is mechanically perfect.
Cranking Speed and Sound Are Diagnostic Clues, Not Just Symptoms
How the engine cranks tells you almost as much as whether it starts.
- Slow or labored cranking, even with good battery voltage and good connections, points toward mechanical drag — tight bearings, hydraulic lock, or accessory drag — rather than an electrical starting-system fault. If the electrical side is confirmed healthy and the engine still turns slowly, look inside the engine or at what's bolted to it.
- Before you condemn the engine, always confirm battery state of charge and cranking voltage. A weak battery or a corroded/loose connection can produce slow-crank or no-crank symptoms that look exactly like a mechanical problem but have nothing to do with the engine internals. This is a cheap, fast check — do it before anything else.
- Any unusual noise during cranking — knocking, grinding, or a single loud bang followed by no further rotation — is a red flag for internal mechanical failure: a rod or main bearing letting go, a broken internal part, or hydro-lock. Stop cranking immediately when you hear this. Don't keep bumping the starter trying to get it to start; you investigate first.
Handle Suspected Hydro-Lock Carefully
If you suspect hydro-lock (coolant or another fluid got into a cylinder), do not force-crank or attempt to restart the engine before manually rotating it and finding the source of the liquid intrusion. Cranking a hydro-locked engine can bend a connecting rod or crack a piston, turning a fixable problem into an expensive one. Manual rotation by breaker bar is both your diagnostic check and your safeguard here.
Easy to Mix Up
- No-crank vs. crank/no-start — no-crank means the engine isn't turning over at all (starting circuit or seized engine); crank/no-start means it's turning over fine but won't fire (compression, fuel, or spark problem). Different diagnostic paths entirely.
- Slow cranking from a weak battery vs. slow cranking from mechanical drag — both look similar at the key, but one is electrical (fix with charging/connections) and one is internal (tight bearings, hydraulic lock, accessory drag). Confirm battery voltage first before blaming the engine.
- Low compression from worn rings/valves vs. low compression from a timing fault — a timing chain/belt failure or sheared key drops compression on all cylinders at once with normal cranking sound; that's different from an isolated compression problem on one or two cylinders.

Normal cranking speed plus adequate compression on all cylinders plus no unusual noise rules out the engine mechanically and points you toward fuel delivery, ignition, or PCM/sensor/security faults. A jumped timing chain would instead show up as low or erratic compression on all cylinders together with normal cranking speed and sound — not adequate compression.
Question: During cranking you hear a single loud bang, then the engine stops turning. What should you do?
Stop cranking immediately. A loud bang followed by no further rotation is a symptom of internal mechanical failure and needs to be investigated before any further starting attempts — continuing to crank risks doing more damage.
