Question 1 of 3

A DOHC engine with variable valve timing has a rattling/knocking noise for about 3 seconds at cold start that disappears once idle stabilizes. The scan tool shows a stored P0011 (Camshaft Position Actuator A – Timing Over-Advanced). The oil level is correct, but the oil is dark and has not been changed in over 12,000 miles.

Technician A says the noise and code could be caused by a sludge-clogged oil control valve (OCV) screen restricting oil flow to the phaser, and recommends checking oil condition, changing the oil, and inspecting/cleaning the OCV screen before condemning the phaser.

Technician B says the noise proves the phaser itself is mechanically worn, and the phaser should be replaced immediately without checking the OCV or oil condition.
