Changing Engine Oil and Filter: Type, Viscosity, and Rating to Spec

The short version — Get the vehicle safely supported, drain the system when it's warm but not hot enough to burn you, refill with the exact quantity and viscosity the manufacturer calls for, and verify no leaks and correct oil level before you call it done.

Why oil and filter service matters

Engine oil does five jobs at once: it lubricates, cools, seals, cleans, and reduces friction between moving parts inside the engine. The filter's job is narrower but critical — it removes particulate contaminants from the oil before that oil reaches bearings and other wear surfaces. If you get the service wrong, you're not just skipping a maintenance item — you're compromising all five of oil's functions at once.

Understanding the oil's path through the engine helps you understand why sequence and setup matter:

  • The oil pump draws oil from the pan/sump.
  • It's then pushed through the filter — this happens before the oil reaches the main galleries, which is why this is called full-flow filtration. Every drop going to the bearings has already been filtered.
  • From there, oil is distributed under pressure to bearings, lifters, and other lubricated points.
  • Afterward, it drains back to the pan by gravity.

This full-flow arrangement is exactly why filter condition and correct filter selection matter so much — everything downstream of the filter depends on it doing its job.

Safety before you touch a wrench

Two safety facts are non-negotiable on this task, and both show up because they're the kind of thing a rushed tech skips:

  • Never remove the drain plug or filter while the oil is hot enough to cause burns. Even after the seal is broken, oil pressure and gravity combine to expel hot oil forcefully — it doesn't just dribble out, it can come out with force. Warm oil drains better than cold oil, but "warm enough to flow well" is not the same as "hot enough to burn."
  • The vehicle must be securely supported on stands or a lift before you get underneath to drain oil or access the filter. Never rely on a jack alone — a jack holds the vehicle up during the lift, but it is not a support device once you're working under the car.

The service procedure and what you're checking for

The actual job breaks down into a short list of checkpoints, each one tied to a way things go wrong if skipped:

  • Refill with the specified quantity and viscosity of oil per manufacturer specification. Don't eyeball it and don't substitute a viscosity because it's what's on the shelf.
  • Check the fill level with the dipstick after allowing time for the oil to drain down into the pan. Checking immediately after filling gives you a false low reading because oil is still working its way down through the upper end.
  • Confirm no leaks at the drain plug and filter after running the engine, then recheck the level afterward. Running the engine repressurizes the system and is the real test of whether your seals hold — a static check right after install won't catch a leak that only shows up under pressure.

Used oil and filter disposal

Used oil and used filters are hazardous waste. They must be captured and disposed of, or recycled, according to environmental regulations — never drained onto the ground or into a sewer. This isn't a courtesy step; it's a compliance requirement tied directly to this task.

Easy to mix up

These failure modes sound similar but have different root causes — knowing which symptom points to which cause is exactly what gets tested:

  • Overfilling vs. underfilling. Overfilling causes aeration/foaming and loss of oil pressure — too much oil lets the crankshaft whip air into it. Underfilling causes oil starvation — there's simply not enough volume to keep the pump fed at all times, especially under cornering or hard acceleration.
  • Leaking drain plug vs. leaking filter. Both can leak from improper torque. But the drain plug specifically can also leak from a damaged or missing sealing washer or from being cross-threaded. Don't assume every leak is a torque problem — inspect the washer and the threads too.
  • Wrong viscosity vs. wrong filter. Wrong viscosity causes poor cold-flow or inadequate hot-temperature film strength — a lubrication problem tied to temperature extremes. An incorrect filter — one with the wrong bypass or anti-drain-back valve — causes a different symptom: dry-start knock or filter collapse. If a customer complains of noise on startup, that points toward filter valve issues, not viscosity.

Because the oil pump pushes oil through the filter before it reaches the main galleries — every bit of oil that lubricates bearings, lifters, and other wear points has already passed through that filter. A bad or wrong filter compromises everything downstream, not just one component.

Question: Technician A says it's fine to remove the drain plug as soon as the engine is warm, because warm oil drains faster. Technician B says the plug should only come out once oil is cool enough to avoid burns, since pressure and gravity will force hot oil out forcefully once the seal breaks. Who is right?

Technician B. Warm oil does flow better, but the rule is specifically that oil must not be hot enough to cause burns when you break the seal — because once you do, oil pressure and gravity combine to push hot oil out with force. Technician A is ignoring the burn-risk fact.

Question: A customer reports a knocking noise for a few seconds every time the engine starts, right after a recent oil change. What's the likely cause, and why?

An incorrect filter — specifically one with the wrong bypass or anti-drain-back valve. That mismatch is called out as causing dry-start knock, which fits a noise that appears right at startup and is tied to a recent filter change.
