Rear Strut Cartridge/Assembly and Upper Mount Inspection

The short version — A rear strut does two jobs at once (damping and structural support), so inspection covers leaks, ride behavior, mount condition, and physical damage — and if you're pulling one apart, the spring gets compressed and secured first, every time.

What a rear strut assembly actually is

A rear strut assembly isn't just a shock absorber — it's a shock-absorbing damper (cartridge) built inside a structural spring housing that does double duty: controlling wheel motion and supporting part of the vehicle's weight while locating suspension geometry. That's why a bad strut doesn't just ride rough — it can also affect alignment angles and how the wheel tracks.

Inside that housing, the cartridge is a sealed or replaceable hydraulic (or gas-charged) unit. As the suspension moves, the piston inside pushes fluid through calibrated valving. That fluid movement is what converts suspension motion into heat — that's the damping action that keeps the tire from bouncing all over the road after every bump.

Checking damping performance

Two ways this shows up on the test:

  • Fluid leakage at the cartridge/shaft seal is your visual red flag. If you see wetness there, the internal seal has failed and you've lost damping — full stop. No leak doesn't guarantee a good strut, but a leak always means it's bad.
  • Bounce test or road test. Push down on the corner and let go, or drive it — you're listening and feeling for excessive bouncing, poor rebound control, or clunking noises. Excessive bounce/poor rebound points to worn internal damping. Clunking points more toward loose mounts or hardware, not necessarily the cartridge itself. Knowing which symptom implicates which failure is a common test angle.

Inspecting the upper mount and strut body

The upper mount is a separate inspection point from the cartridge, and it fails differently:

  • Visually and manually check the rubber isolator in the mount for cracking, tearing, or general deterioration.
  • Check for looseness, excessive play, or noise when you rotate or flex the mount. A mount can be structurally intact but still noisy or sloppy — that's what you're feeling/listening for by hand, not just looking at.

Then look at the metal parts of the strut itself:

  • Strut rod (shaft): check for a bent shaft, pitting, or scoring. Any of these can tear the shaft seal on the next stroke and cause a leak — so rod damage and cartridge leakage are related, not separate problems.
  • Strut body/housing: check for dents, corrosion, or damage that could bind piston travel. A dented housing doesn't have to leak to be bad — it can restrict the piston's movement mechanically, which kills ride control even with a "good" cartridge inside.

Spring safety before disassembly

If the job calls for taking the strut assembly apart — replacing a cartridge, mount, or bearing — the spring must be safely compressed and secured with an approved spring compressor before disassembly. This isn't optional shop practice, it's a stored-energy hazard: an unsecured spring can release suddenly and cause serious injury. This step comes before you touch any retaining nut or mount fastener, not after.

Easy to mix up

  • Leak vs. bounce/rebound complaint: A leak is a visual finding at the seal — direct evidence of internal seal failure. A bounce/rebound complaint is a performance finding from a road or bounce test — it tells you damping is weak, but you may not see a leak at all (some failures are internal without external leakage). Don't assume "no leak" means "good strut."
  • Clunking vs. bouncing: Clunk noise leans toward a loose mount or hardware issue. Excessive bounce or poor rebound control leans toward worn damping in the cartridge. Same road test, different diagnosis depending on which symptom you hear.
  • Mount rubber damage vs. mount looseness/play: Cracked or torn rubber is a visual defect. Looseness or noise when rotating/flexing is a functional defect. A mount could show one without the other, and both are called out separately in the inspection.
  • Bent/pitted/scored rod vs. dented/corroded housing: Both can ruin a strut's function, but through different mechanisms — rod damage threatens the seal (leads to leaks), housing damage can physically bind the piston (restricts travel) even without any leak.

Check yourself

Question: A technician performs a bounce test and hears a clunk on rebound, but sees no fluid leakage anywhere on the strut. What does this most likely point to?

A loose or worn upper mount (or loose mounting hardware), not necessarily a failed cartridge. Clunking is associated with worn damping or loose mounts — and with no leak present, the mount/hardware is the more likely culprit to inspect closely, including checking for play when rotating or flexing it.

Technician A says a rear strut's spring housing only serves to hold the coil spring in place and has no effect on suspension geometry. Technician B says the strut assembly supports part of the vehicle's weight and helps locate the wheel/suspension geometry, in addition to damping motion. Who is right?

Technician B. The rear strut assembly combines the damper and a structural spring housing — it supports vehicle weight and locates suspension geometry, not just damping wheel motion. Technician A is wrong to say it has no effect on geometry.

Question: Before disassembling a strut assembly to service the cartridge, what must be done first, and why?
