Inspecting a Front Strut Cartridge or Assembly
The short version — A strut controls spring oscillation by forcing fluid through valving as the piston moves; it should resist compression less than rebound, and any leak, dent, scored rod, torn boot, or bad upper mount shows up as excess bounce, noise, or harsh ride.
What the Strut Is Actually Doing
A strut is not just a spring holder. Its job is to control spring oscillation (damping ride and handling) while also positioning the wheel and carrying steering/suspension loads into the body. That dual role is why you inspect more than just "does it leak" — you're checking a structural steering component, not just a shock absorber.
Inside the tube, a piston attached to the rod moves through fluid (or gas/fluid). As it travels, valving in the piston or base meters flow through orifices, and that metered flow is what creates resistance in both directions. No valving, no damping — the spring would just keep bouncing on its own.
Why Compression and Rebound Feel Different
This is a core testable concept: the strut is deliberately asymmetric in how it resists motion.
- Compression (jounce/bump): piston moves down/into the tube, fluid goes through the compression-side valving, and resistance is typically lower.
- Rebound (extension): piston moves up/out, fluid goes through rebound-side valving, and resistance is typically higher.
Why build it that way? Compression happens first — the wheel moves up into the car when it hits a bump. You want the suspension to absorb that fairly easily so the impact doesn't slam through to the body. Then rebound follows as the wheel comes back down, and that's the phase you want tightly controlled, because rebound is what settles the body back down after the bump. If you let rebound go soft, the car keeps bouncing.
That sequence matters for diagnosis too: a worn or leaking cartridge loses rebound control first. The driver feels it as excess bounce — the car floats or continues to move after a bump instead of settling. If you understand why rebound control degrades first, you'll correctly connect "bouncy ride" to a strut problem instead of chasing something else.
What You Physically Check
The inspection is visual and functional — you're not disassembling to look inside the valving itself.
- Strut tube: look for fluid seepage or leakage, external denting, or scoring on the exposed rod. A dented tube or scored rod can damage the seal and cause leakage even if it hasn't leaked yet — that's a failure waiting to happen.
- Dust boot / bump stop: check for tears or deterioration. This is the rod's only protection from road grit; a torn boot lets contaminants reach the rod and seal, which is exactly what causes scoring and leaks down the road.
- Upper strut mount/bearing: check for smooth rotation, excess play, or noise. This is inspected alongside the strut because it directly affects steering feel — a stiff or noisy mount can mimic or mask a strut problem.
- Abnormal noise: listen for clunk or knock during suspension travel or steering input. This can point to a worn mount, loose components, or internal cartridge wear — so noise alone doesn't tell you which part failed, it tells you to inspect all of them.
Common Failure Modes (know these for matching-type questions)
- Seal leakage → loss of damping → excessive body float.
- Internal valve wear → harsh or inconsistent damping (not necessarily a visible leak).
- Bent or scored rod → can cause binding or leakage.
- Corroded/seized cartridge → prevents removal (a service/access problem, not a driving symptom).
- Worn upper mount bearing → steering noise or stiffness.
Notice the pattern: leakage problems show up as ride symptoms (float, bounce), while mount problems show up as steering symptoms (noise, stiffness). That split is a good mental shortcut when a question describes a symptom and asks you to identify the likely cause.
Safety Before You Ever Touch the Spring
If the inspection leads to disassembly, stop and respect the stored energy in the coil spring.
- The coil spring holds significant stored energy and must be compressed and controlled with a proper spring compressor before you take the strut apart. An uncontrolled release can cause serious injury.
- Never rely on the vehicle's jack alone when removing spring load — always use proper support plus a compressor tool that's actually rated for the job.
This isn't just shop-safety boilerplate — it's testable because ASE wants to confirm you know the spring is dangerous before disassembly, not just during it.
Easy to Mix Up
- Compression vs. rebound resistance: compression is the lower-resistance direction, rebound is the higher-resistance direction. Don't reverse them.
- Leak symptom vs. mount symptom: leakage/internal wear → ride problems (bounce, harshness). Worn mount → steering problems (noise, stiffness). Both can cause noise, but only the mount is tied specifically to steering feel.
- Which happens first: compression happens first (bump), rebound happens second (return) — and it's rebound control that fails first as the cartridge wears.
