Inspecting Front Wheel Bearings, Seals, and Hubs

The short version — you're looking for damaged races/rollers and bad grease on teardown, roughness or noise when you spin the hub by hand, road symptoms like speed-related growling that shifts when steering, and grease leaks that point to a shot seal letting water in.

What Good Bearings Look Like (and What Bad Ones Look Like)

When you pull a hub apart to inspect a serviceable bearing, you're checking the races and rollers for specific damage patterns. Pitting, bluing (heat discoloration), spalling, scoring, or flat spots on the races and rollers all mean the bearing is done — replace it. Each of these tells you something different about how it failed:

  • Bluing means the bearing ran hot — usually from lack of lubrication or being overloaded/over-torqued.
  • Spalling and pitting mean fatigue or contamination has already started eating the metal surface.
  • Flat spots usually show up where a roller sat in one place too long, or where corrosion pitted a single contact point.

Beyond the metal itself, check for adequate, uniform grease coverage with no contamination. A bearing can look mechanically fine and still be on borrowed time if the grease is dried out, packed unevenly, or full of dirt/water. Grease isn't just there to reduce friction — it's the barrier keeping moisture and debris off those precision surfaces. If that barrier fails, corrosion and pitting follow.

The Hand-Spin Test

Before you even think about grease or races, spin the hub by hand with the wheel off the ground and feel/listen for roughness, noise, or binding. This is a fast, no-tools check that tells you a lot:

  • Roughness or grinding = race or roller damage already happening.
  • Binding or drag = could be lack of lubrication, overtightened adjustment, or physical damage.
  • Smooth, quiet rotation = bearing is likely still serviceable (though you still inspect visually once it's apart).

Think of this as your first read on bearing health — it's what you do before disassembly to decide whether further inspection is even needed, and it's also how you confirm a repair after reassembly.

Reading the Symptoms From the Driver's Seat

A lot of ASE questions on this task are about diagnosing from customer complaints and road symptoms, not just teardown inspection. Know these patterns cold:

  • A growling or humming noise that changes with vehicle speed is a classic wheel bearing symptom. The noise builds or fades as road speed changes because the damaged rollers are contacting the race at a rate tied to wheel rotation.
  • That noise may also change in pitch when steering slightly left or right. Turning the wheel loads the bearing on one side and unloads it on the other, which changes how the damaged surfaces contact each other — so the sound shifts.
  • A wobble or looseness felt in the steering wheel, or vibration, points to bearing play — the hub has developed slop from wear or damage and isn't holding the wheel true anymore.

These symptoms matter because they let you diagnose a bad bearing before you ever pull the wheel off, and they help you confirm your diagnosis matches what you find on teardown.

Seals: The Bearing's Bodyguard

The seal's job is simple: keep grease in, keep water and dirt out. When it fails, both directions go wrong at once.

  • A failed seal lets grease leak out — you'll see this as grease on the inside of the wheel or rotor, or on the backing plate. That's your visual tell that the seal is shot.
  • At the same time, a failed seal lets water and contaminants in, which accelerates corrosion, pitting, and premature bearing failure.

This is why seal inspection isn't a separate afterthought — a bad seal is often the root cause of a bearing that otherwise looked fine when new. If you replace a bearing but ignore a leaking seal (or reuse a questionable one), you're setting up a repeat failure. Always tie your seal inspection back to what you find on the bearing — grease on the backing plate should make you expect to see contamination or corrosion when you get the bearing apart.

Easy to Mix Up

  • Bluing vs. pitting/spalling — bluing is a heat signature (lack of lubrication or overload), while pitting and spalling are surface fatigue/contamination damage. Both mean "replace," but they point to different root causes worth mentioning on the ticket.
  • Grease leak location — grease visible on the inside of the wheel/rotor or on the backing plate is the tell for a bad seal. Don't confuse this with normal light grease film from packing during service.
  • Noise change with speed vs. noise change with steering input — both are wheel bearing symptoms, but they're testing two different mechanisms: speed-related change ties to rotation rate, while steering-related pitch change ties to loading/unloading the bearing.

Check Yourself

Question: A customer says they hear a growling noise that gets louder as they speed up, and it changes pitch slightly when they nudge the steering wheel left. What does this point to, and why does steering affect the sound?

This points to a wheel bearing problem. The noise changes with speed because it's tied to wheel rotation rate. It shifts with steering input because turning slightly loads the bearing on one side and unloads it on the other, changing how the damaged rollers/race contact each other — which changes the sound.

Question: Technician A says a rough or noisy result when spinning the hub by hand always means the bearing needs to be replaced immediately, no further inspection needed. Technician B says the hand-spin test is a quick check for roughness, noise, or binding, but the bearing should still be inspected for pitting, bluing, spalling, scoring, or flat spots before a final call is made. Who is right?

Technician B is right. The hand-spin test tells you roughness, noise, or binding is present, which indicates race/roller damage or lack of lubrication — but the actual inspection of races and rollers for pitting, discoloration, spalling, scoring, or flat spots is what confirms the condition and drives the replace/reuse decision.

Question: You find grease on the inside of a rotor and on the backing plate during inspection. What does this tell you, and what related damage should you expect to find on the bearing itself?

Grease showing up on the inside of the wheel/rotor or on the backing plate means the seal has failed and is leaking grease. Because a failed seal also lets water and contaminants in, you should expect to find accelerated corrosion, pitting, or other premature damage on the bearing when you inspect it.
