Air Filter, Housing, and Intake System Inspection

The short version — Every bit of air the engine breathes has to pass through the filter media before it reaches the throttle body; any gap, crack, or bad seal downstream of the MAF sensor lets unfiltered air sneak in and eat the engine from the inside.

How the intake system is supposed to work

The air intake system pulls outside air through the filter, through the filter housing, then through ductwork to the throttle body or carburetor. The whole job of this path is to strip out airborne particulates before the air ever reaches the engine. That's it — one job, but a critical one.

The filter element sits so that 100% of incoming air is forced through the filter media before it gets to the "clean" side of the housing. Any air that bypasses the media — through a cracked housing, a missing seal, or a filter that isn't seated right — carries contaminants straight into the engine. This is the core idea behind almost every question on this task: filtration only works if there's no way around the filter.

On most panel or box-style filters, air moves from the outside (dirty) face to the inside (clean) face. Pleated media is used to pack more surface area into a small space, which stretches service life and keeps restriction (airflow resistance) low. More pleats = more filtering surface = filter breathes easier and lasts longer before it clogs.

Inspecting the filter element

When you pull the filter, you're checking for:

  • Dirt loading — how much grime has built up on the media
  • Oil contamination — media that's gone soft, dark, or greasy
  • Torn media — actual holes or rips in the paper/pleats
  • Crushed pleats — pleats folded over or collapsed, which kills surface area and restricts flow

The standard check is to hold the filter up to a light source, or shine a shop light through it, and look for tears, oil staining, or heavy dirt loading. If light passes through evenly and the pleats look intact, it's probably fine. If you see dark spots, holes, or the pleats are smashed flat, it's done.

Don't forget orientation. If the filter is directional, it has to go in the correct way and sit fully seated in the housing with no gaps around the edges. A filter installed backwards or sitting slightly cocked leaves an air path around the media instead of through it — same problem as a torn filter, just self-inflicted.

Inspecting the housing and ductwork

The filter is only half the story. The housing and the ducting between the housing and the throttle body have to seal up tight too. Inspect the housing and ductwork for cracks, loose clamps, disconnected hoses, and damaged or missing gaskets/seals — because any of these lets unmetered air in downstream of the MAF sensor.

Why does that matter so much? Two reasons:

  • Unfiltered air carries dirt and debris straight to the cylinders, accelerating wear on cylinder walls, rings, and sensors. A torn filter or a housing that doesn't seal is doing real, measurable damage over time, not just a theoretical problem.
  • Air entering after the MAF sensor is air the PCM never measured. That throws off the air/fuel calculation for however much air came in that way — even though nothing failed electrically, the fueling will be off because the computer doesn't know that extra air is there.

Servicing without creating new problems

When you're putting things back together:

  • Avoid touching the MAF sensor element. It's a fragile, sensitive part — handling it can shift its calibration or damage the sensing wire/film.
  • Reconnect every duct and clamp securely. A hose that's not fully seated or a clamp left loose is functionally the same failure as a cracked housing — it's a path for unmetered air and a vacuum leak, and it'll set the same kind of driveability or sensor complaints as an unfiltered air problem.

Easy to mix up

  • A dirty filter vs. a torn filter — these sound similar but aren't the same failure. A dirty filter restricts airflow (engine can act starved for air). A torn filter or unsealed housing lets air through unfiltered (engine gets dirty air it wasn't supposed to get). One is a restriction problem, the other is a contamination problem — know which symptom goes with which cause.
  • Unfiltered air vs. unmetered air — related, but not identical ideas in this material. Unfiltered air is air that skipped the filter media. Unmetered air is air that entered downstream of the MAF sensor, so the PCM never counted it. A leak downstream of the MAF is usually both unfiltered and unmetered at the same time, which is why housing/duct leaks are worse than a simple dirty filter.
  • Filter orientation vs. filter seating — orientation is about installing a directional filter the right way; seating is about making sure it's fully in place with no gaps at the edges. A filter can be installed the correct direction and still leak air around its edges if it isn't fully seated.

Question: A duct clamp downstream of the MAF sensor is left loose after service. What are the two consequences, and why?

It creates both an unfiltered air path (dirt and debris can enter the engine, accelerating wear on cylinder walls, rings, and sensors) and an unmetered air path (air enters after the MAF, so the PCM never counts it, throwing off the air/fuel calculation). Both stem from the same root cause: air is now bypassing the parts of the system designed to filter and measure it.

Question: Technician A says a filter must be installed in the correct orientation if it's directional. Technician B says a filter must be fully seated in the housing with no gaps around the edges. Who is right?

Both are right. Orientation and seating are two separate checks — a directional filter installed backwards is wrong even if it's seated tight, and a correctly oriented filter that isn't fully seated still leaves gaps for unfiltered air to bypass the media.
