Inspect, test, repair and/or replace switches, relays, bulbs, sockets, connectors, terminals, wires, and control modules of interior lighting circuits (such as: courtesy, dome, map, vanity, glove box, cargo, trunk, hood, instrument, and accent lighting).

Diagnosing Interior Lighting Circuits: Dome, Map, Courtesy, Cargo, and Instrument Lights
The short version — Interior lights are controlled by door/lid switches and modules, not simple on/off switches, so a light "stuck on" or "not fading out" almost always points to a switch or wiring fault, not the bulb.
How These Circuits Actually Work
Dome, map, courtesy, vanity, cargo, trunk, glove box, and hood lights don't just turn on with a manual switch flip. They're tied into door-open and ignition-state logic, meaning a body control module (or a simpler switch network) decides when they light up based on door position, key state, or both. This matters diagnostically: if a light behaves wrong, you have to think about what condition is supposed to trigger it, not just whether the bulb has power all the time.
A lot of these systems also run a delayed-off (fade-out) function. Open the door, get in, shut the door — the dome light doesn't snap off instantly. It stays on briefly, then ramps or steps down under module control. If a customer complains "my dome light shuts off too fast" or "it doesn't fade, it just clicks off," that's a control module or programming behavior question, not a bulb or switch failure by itself. Know that this delay is a designed feature so you don't chase a phantom bulb problem.
Instrument panel and gauge lighting is its own animal. It's typically wired off the headlamp/parking-lamp switch circuit — turn on your lights, the gauges light up too. But brightness isn't fixed. Most vehicles add a separate rheostat or BCM-controlled PWM dimmer just for panel brightness, and this dimmer circuit is separate from the door-triggered dome/courtesy circuits. This separation is a common test point: a dead dome light and a dead instrument light are two different circuits with two different root causes, even though both are "interior lighting."
Testing Procedure
When you get a complaint on any of these circuits, work it in this order:
- Check for voltage at the bulb socket under the condition that should trigger the light — key on, door open, whatever the design calls for. Use a DMM or test light. No voltage under the correct trigger condition means you look upstream (fuse, switch, wiring, module output).
- Check continuity/resistance of the door jamb switch or lid switch with an ohmmeter. These switches are mechanical and wear out, corrode, or get knocked out of adjustment. A switch that won't close (or won't open) breaks the whole logic chain even if everything else is fine.
- Confirm ground integrity at the light assembly. Don't skip this — a bad ground looks like a bulb problem (dim or flickering light) but a new bulb won't fix it.
Reading the Failure Symptoms
Different symptoms point to different root causes. Match the pattern before you start swapping parts:
- One bulb dead, everything else on that circuit works fine → burned-out bulb or LED. This is the simple case — single circuit, single light, no ripple effect.
- A light stuck on, stuck off, or missing its fade-out delay → failed door/lid switch. The switch is either not opening, not closing, or not sending the right signal for the module to run its delay logic.
- Light is dim, flickers, or is intermittent → corroded or broken ground connection. Power delivery might be fine; it's the return path that's compromised.
- Multiple lights on the same circuit are all dead → failed BCM output driver or an internal relay failure. When the problem spans several lights that share a control point, look at the module or relay feeding all of them, not each bulb individually.
- Entire circuit dead, nothing works at all → blown fuse. This is the most basic checkpoint and should be verified early, since it explains total circuit failure cleanly.
The Big Test Trap: "Light Stays On With Door Closed"
This exact scenario shows up often: a single light stays on even with the door closed. The instinct is to blame the bulb or jump straight to "bad module." Resist that. The correct diagnosis is a stuck-closed door switch or a wire shorted to power — something is telling the circuit the door is still open, or power is getting to the bulb regardless of switch state. Verify the switch state and wiring before you condemn the module. Modules get blamed too often when the real fault is a cheap door jamb switch or a chafed wire touching a power source.
Easy to Mix Up
- Fade-out delay vs. dimmer control: fade-out is a time-based function (light stays on, then ramps down after door closes or key comes out). The dimmer (rheostat or BCM PWM) is a brightness function for instrument panel lighting, tied to the headlamp switch — completely different circuit and completely different purpose.
- Single light out vs. multiple lights out on one circuit: single bulb failure is almost always the bulb itself. Multiple lights failing together on a shared circuit points to the BCM output driver or a relay, not multiple coincidental bulb failures.
- Stuck-on light vs. dim/flickering light: stuck-on suggests a switch or short-to-power problem. Dim or flickering suggests a ground problem. Don't confuse a wiring/switch symptom with a grounding symptom — the fix is completely different.
Check Yourself
Question: A customer says the dome light comes on with the door open, but it never fades out — it just clicks off abruptly when the door shuts. What should you suspect?
This points to a problem with the delayed-off (fade-out) function, which is normally controlled by the module. Since the light does respond to the door switch (comes on, goes off), the basic switch and wiring are working — the issue is with the fade-out control logic, not the bulb or door switch continuity itself.
Question: Technician A says a dome light that stays on with the door fully closed is proof the control module has failed. Technician B says the first things to check are the door switch state and the wiring for a short to power. Who is right?
Technician B is right. A light stuck on with the door closed points to a stuck-closed door switch or a wire shorted to power — you must verify switch state and wiring before condemning the module. Technician A jumped straight to blaming the module without ruling out the simpler, more common causes.
Question: Several interior lights that all share one circuit are all inoperative at once. Is this more likely a bulb problem or something else?
Something else — likely a failed BCM output driver or an internal relay. A single burned-out bulb only takes down one light. When multiple lights on the same circuit fail together, the shared control point (module output or relay) is the more likely cause.
