Wheel Bearing Service: Repack, Replace, and Adjust

The short version — Know the two bearing architectures (serviceable tapered roller vs. sealed hub unit), know that seals and races always get replaced with new cones, and know that endplay has to be just right — not too tight, not too loose.

Two Different Animals: Serviceable vs. Sealed

Modern vehicles use one of two setups, and the test will expect you to tell them apart.

  • Serviceable tapered roller bearings: an inner cone-and-roller set and an outer cone-and-roller set, each riding on its own race pressed into the hub. A spindle nut holds the whole stack together and is what sets bearing adjustment (endplay).
  • Sealed, non-serviceable wheel hub/bearing assemblies: pre-set and pre-lubricated at the factory, installed as a bolt-in unit. These often carry an integral ABS tone ring and sensor built right into the assembly — no adjustment, no repack, just replace the whole unit.

Why this matters: if a bearing is part of a sealed hub assembly, there is no "repack" procedure — you replace the whole thing. Trying to adjust endplay on a sealed unit or trying to "just replace the race" on it isn't a thing. Save the adjustment knowledge for the serviceable tapered-roller design.

Repacking a Serviceable Bearing: Order Matters

On the tapered roller design, a few rules are non-negotiable:

  • Inner and outer cones are not interchangeable with each other. Each cone only mates with its own race.
  • Races get replaced as a matched set with their cone — never bolt a new cone onto an old race, and never reuse a race with a new cone. Mismatched wear patterns will chew the bearing up fast.
  • The grease seal goes in behind the inner bearing, sealing in lubricant and keeping water and road grit out. Seal lip direction and installed depth must match the original orientation — get it backwards and it won't hold grease or keep contaminants out.
  • Seals are single-use. Every time the hub comes off, that seal comes out and a new one goes in. Don't try to reuse it, even if it looks fine.

The repack sequence, in order:

  1. Remove the wheel and hub.
  2. Clean all old grease off the cones and out of the hub cavity.
  3. Inspect the races and cones for pitting, heat discoloration, spalling, or flat spots.
  4. Pack new grease thoroughly into the roller cage — by hand or with a bearing packer — so grease is worked all the way between the rollers, not just smeared on the outside.
  5. Reassemble in this order: inner bearing, seal, hub, outer bearing, washer, adjusting nut.

That reassembly order is a good one to memorize word-for-word — it's exactly the kind of sequence question that shows up.

Setting Endplay — Why "Close Enough" Isn't Close Enough

The spindle nut on a serviceable bearing sets endplay — the tiny amount of axial play built into the bearing on purpose. Getting this wrong causes two very different failure modes:

  • Too tight: the bearing runs hot, the grease film breaks down, and the bearing fails prematurely from overheating.
  • Too loose: the wheel wobbles, tires wear unevenly, and the bearing takes accelerated damage from impact loading (every bump hammers the loose bearing components).

Correct endplay is critical precisely because both directions of error lead to bearing failure — just by different mechanisms. This is a classic "why" the test likes to probe: it's not just "tighten the nut," it's "tighten it to a specific play tolerance for a reason."

Diagnosing Bearing Problems

Symptoms that point to a bad wheel bearing:

  • Growling or grinding noise that changes with vehicle speed — classic bearing wear signature.
  • Humming or roaring that changes when cornering. A common tendency is for the noise to get louder when weight shifts off the bad side in a turn — but this isn't universal, so don't rule out a bearing just because the noise doesn't behave exactly that way.
  • Looseness or play felt when rocking the wheel top-to-bottom (12/6 o'clock) by hand.
  • Clicking noise or ABS fault codes — on integral-sensor hub units, this points to a damaged tone ring, not necessarily bearing wear itself.

Diagnostic checks to confirm:

  • Dial indicator to measure actual axial endplay or lateral runout — the objective, numeric check.
  • Hand-rocking the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock to feel play.
  • Rotating the wheel by hand to feel or hear roughness or catch points as it spins.

Don't Skip the Small Stuff

A few habits separate a correct job from a comeback:

  • Inspect and clean the spindle and the dust cap along with the cotter pin or nut-locking mechanism.
  • Replace cotter pins, nut locks, or any single-use retaining hardware — don't reuse them just because they look okay.
  • Never mix used bearings or races, and never swap parts side-to-side "because they looked the same." Each side's set is matched.
  • Support the vehicle securely and follow proper wheel-off procedure — this work is done raised, wheel off, full access.

Easy to Mix Up

  • Sealed hub/bearing assembly vs. serviceable tapered roller bearing — sealed units are bolt-in replacements with no adjustment and no repack; tapered roller bearings are field-serviceable and adjustable via the spindle nut.
  • Too tight vs. too loose endplay — both cause bearing failure, but tight causes overheating/lack of lubrication film, while loose causes wobble, uneven tire wear, and impact damage.
  • Race replacement rule — races and cones are always replaced together as a set; a race is never reused with a new cone or vice versa.

Check yourself

Question: Why must a grease seal always be replaced when the hub is removed, even if it looks undamaged?

Question: A tech sets a spindle nut too tight during bearing adjustment. What's the expected failure mode, and why?

The bearing will run hot and fail prematurely from overheating — too-tight adjustment squeezes out the lubricant film between the rollers and races, so there isn't enough grease film to prevent friction-driven heat buildup.
