Using proper safety procedures, remove, clean and inspect mechanical brake components, such as: shoes/linings, springs, pins, self-adjusters, levers, clips, brake backing (support) plates and other related brake hardware; determine needed repairs.

Drum Brake Hardware Teardown: Inspection and Repair Decisions
The short version — Drum brake hardware only works as a system: if one spring, pin, or lever is weak or worn, the whole self-adjusting mechanism fails, so you inspect and replace hardware as a set, not piece by piece.
How the System Works Together
Every part inside a drum brake has one job: turn hydraulic pressure from the wheel cylinder into friction, then let go cleanly so the shoe doesn't drag. The shoes, springs, pins, self-adjuster, levers, clips, and backing plate all work together to do this and to keep shoe-to-drum clearance correct automatically as the linings wear down. This is why you never diagnose one component in isolation — a missing clip or a stretched spring changes how every other part behaves.
The backing (support) plate is the foundation of the whole assembly. It bolts to the axle flange or steering knuckle and gives you a fixed, rigid surface to mount the wheel cylinder, shoes, springs, and anchor. If that plate isn't flat and rigid, the shoes can't seat properly and the self-energizing action (the shoe "wedging" itself into the drum under braking) won't work right. When you inspect it, look for:
- Wear grooves at the shoe contact pads (where the shoe rubs the plate as it moves)
- Distortion or bending
- Rust buildup
- Looseness at the mounting bolts
During reassembly, lightly lubricate the raised shoe contact pads with high-temperature brake grease — this lets the shoes slide smoothly without binding, but you don't want grease anywhere near the friction surface.
Springs, Pins, and the Self-Adjuster: Why Timing Matters
Return springs pull the shoes back off the drum and back to the anchor when you release the pedal. This has to happen before the self-adjuster can index and take up slack. If the return spring is weak, the shoe doesn't fully retract, the adjuster never gets its chance to work, and you end up with drag or a slowly rising pedal effort over time.
Hold-down springs, pins, and clips have a different job — they keep the shoe flat against the backing plate while still letting it pivot and slide during application. Without proper hold-down tension, the shoe can wobble, chatter, or come loose from the plate.
When inspecting springs, check for:
- Stretching (spring no longer holds proper tension)
- Discoloration from heat (a sign the brake has been running hot or dragging)
- Distortion or visible fatigue
Replace springs as a set when servicing shoes — even if only one looks bad, the others have seen the same miles and heat cycles. A single weak spring in an otherwise fresh set is a comeback waiting to happen.
The parking brake lever/strut, where equipped, mechanically applies the shoes without any hydraulic input. Because it's a separate mechanical path, you check its linkage and adjustment for free movement and correct engagement travel — if it's binding or over-adjusted, it can hold the shoes against the drum even when the hydraulic system is fully released.
Reading the Symptoms
Drum brake complaints usually point straight back to one piece of hardware:
- Dragging brakes or worse fuel economy → weak or broken return springs (shoe isn't pulling back)
- Pedal needs more travel, or pedal feels low → self-adjuster isn't functioning (clearance keeps growing as linings wear)
- Grabbing or pulling → contaminated or glazed linings
- Clicking or rattling → hold-down hardware or springs missing or worn out
Matching the complaint to the part it points to saves diagnostic time — you don't have to pull the drum blind, you go in already suspecting the right area.
Safety Rules You Cannot Skip
Two safety facts are non-negotiable on every drum brake job:
- Support the vehicle on proper stands before pulling wheels and drums — never trust a jack alone. A jack can fail or slip; stands are rated to hold the load while you work underneath.
- Relieve spring tension with the correct brake spring tools. Return springs and hold-down springs store real energy — trying to pop them off by hand or with the wrong tool risks injury.
- Never use compressed air to blow off brake dust. Older linings may contain asbestos, so you follow OSHA-approved wet-cleaning or HEPA-vacuum methods instead. Blowing dust into the air is exactly what you're trying to avoid.
Easy to mix up
- Return springs vs. hold-down springs — Return springs pull the shoe away from the drum and back to the anchor (this must happen before the adjuster can work). Hold-down springs/pins/clips keep the shoe flat against the backing plate while still letting it move. Different job, different failure symptom.
- Weak return spring vs. failed self-adjuster — Both can cause drag-like or pedal-feel problems, but weak return springs cause dragging/reduced fuel economy, while a self-adjuster that isn't indexing causes increasing pedal travel or a low pedal. The return spring failure is often the root cause of the adjuster not getting its chance to work.
Check yourself
Question: A customer complains the brake pedal has been sinking lower over the last few months, requiring more pedal travel to stop. What's the most likely hardware cause, and why?
A self-adjuster that isn't indexing. As linings wear, clearance between shoe and drum grows if the adjuster mechanism isn't taking up the slack — this shows up as increasing pedal travel or a low pedal, exactly as described in the symptom list.
Question: Technician A says you should replace only the one return spring that looks stretched, since the others still look fine. Technician B says replace all the return springs as a set whenever you're servicing the shoes. Who is right?
Technician B. Springs should be replaced as a set when servicing shoes, since all the springs have been through the same heat and mileage — a single weak spring left in place risks slow retraction and drum drag even after the "fix."
Question: Why must you inspect the backing plate itself, not just the shoes and springs, during a drum brake job?
The backing plate is the rigid mounting surface for the wheel cylinder, shoes, springs, and anchor. If it's distorted, rusted, loose at its bolts, or worn at the shoe contact pads, the shoes can't seat properly and the self-energizing action won't work correctly — even with new shoes and springs installed.
